Day After New Year's

this demanding rain poured in
driven droves creating harmonic
pitter-pattering then forming
concentric circles as it droned
on and on. an ancient chant
no doubt, heard through
the ages. not cold enough for
snow, the frigid air was driven
northward by the maritime heat.
respect the Atlantic Ocean
but the moisture was not to be
denied or transformed. it spoke
in sheets of rain falling faster.
it consumed New Year's Day
and Christmas vacation memories.
these puddles remained only
as monuments to their passing.
the sky's grays had descended to
earth shrieking into a voracious
fog. it was like being trapped in
the hurricane looking for an eye
to see out of. its January now
not October this forceful rain told
secrets, revealing everything
not said but internally surmised.
the air was heavy and the sun
absent. winter storm, winter weather
and this rain perpetuated 1998.
its relentless recollection of a year's
passing in a rhythmic cadence
ending up as a puddle.
